Does the Transmission in Your German Car Need Any Special Care?

Your German car handles like a dream, and you want it to stay that way. So, is there anything special that you should do for things like your car’s transmission? Group One Motorwerks has these suggestions for you.

Watch for Transmission Fluid Leaks

Leaks from your transmission are a big sign of trouble. The fluid itself may be red or reddish-brown in color. If it’s older, it will be darker brown or even black. It’s greasy, because its main job is to lubricate the transmission, and you’ll see transmission leaks toward the rear of the car. Transmission leaks are not a great sign, because the transmission is supposed to be sealed. So, if you are spotting a leak, it’s something you need to take seriously.

If Something Feels Weird, There Might Be Something Going On

The most obvious signs that you’ve got transmission issues are going to come from the transmission’s performance. If you’re noticing hesitation when the transmission should be changing gears or if you feel the transmission slipping, don’t ignore it. Even if the problem seems intermittent or doesn’t seem like a big deal, anything that feels different in your transmission means that something has changed.

Dashboard Warning Lights Could Be Related to the Transmission

There’s likely not a dedicated transmission warning light on your dash. Odds are that if something is wrong with the transmission, your car’s onboard computer will light up the check engine light. As usual with dashboard warning lights, heed those warnings. The car is trying to communicate to you that something isn’t right. Getting to the shop quickly means you might be able to avoid a massive repair.

Read up on What the Owner’s Manual Says

The best way to make sure you’re pampering your German car’s transmission as fully as possible is to read the owner’s manual. Your car’s owner’s manual has all of the information that you need about what you need to do for the transmission and when it needs to be done. You don’t have to memorize the details, but it’s good to have an understanding of what to expect.
